Moxibustion in Fargo – Gentle Heat for Healing

At Jenny Lea L.Ac. in Fargo, moxibustion (commonly called moxa) is offered as a supportive therapy within acupuncture treatments. Moxa is an age-old practice in Chinese medicine that uses the warmth of dried mugwort to gently stimulate healing. Just as acupuncture uses fine needles to guide the body back into balance, moxibustion uses heat and herbal energy to encourage circulation, strengthen the body, and dispel cold or stagnation.

What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion involves the application of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) that is lit and allowed to smolder, producing a penetrating warmth. In traditional Chinese medicine, this warmth is said to move qi and blood, drive out cold, and restore balance. Moxa can be applied directly over acupuncture points, held above the skin, or used in ointment form with a gentle heat source.

At Jenny Lea L.Ac., I often use moxa ointment with heat, a modern, clean, and comfortable method that allows patients to experience the benefits of moxibustion without smoke or ash.

The Benefits of Moxa

Moxibustion is especially helpful in conditions where warmth, movement, and circulation are needed. Patients often describe the sensation as deeply relaxing and comforting. Benefits may include:

  • Pain relief – easing stiff joints, chronic pain, and muscle tension

  • Improved circulation – warming areas of poor blood flow or coldness

  • Support for chronic conditions – especially those marked by weakness, fatigue, or sensitivity to cold

  • Digestive support – helping relieve bloating, sluggish digestion, or abdominal discomfort

  • Women’s health – soothing menstrual pain, regulating cycles, and easing menopausal symptoms

  • Immune support – strengthening resistance and resilience, especially during colder seasons

In Chinese medicine, cold can “constrict” and block the smooth flow of energy. By bringing in warmth, moxa helps restore natural movement and comfort.

How Moxa Is Used in Treatment

At my clinic, moxa is never a stand-alone service but is integrated into your acupuncture treatment when it is indicated. I may select it if your condition shows signs of cold, weakness, or sluggish circulation. It may be combined with:

  • Acupuncture – to enhance the movement of qi and blood

  • Cupping or gua sha – to release muscle tension and stagnation

  • Myofascial meridian work – to soften and open the fascial planes

  • Chinese herbal medicine – to reinforce the warming, strengthening effect internally

  • Not every patient needs moxibustion, but for those who do, it can provide a unique sense of warmth and relief.

A Holistic Approach

Chinese medicine is always about pattern recognition—matching therapies to the unique needs of each person. If your system shows signs of cold or weakness, moxa may be recommended. If your condition involves heat, inflammation, or excess, other therapies may be chosen instead. The goal is balance.

A Long Tradition

Moxibustion has been practiced for thousands of years across East Asia. Ancient Chinese texts describe its use for preventing illness, supporting longevity, and strengthening the body. It was historically used alongside acupuncture, but in many classical texts, moxa is given equal weight in importance.

For example, the Classic of Difficulties (Nan Jing) highlights moxibustion as essential in conditions of cold and weakness. The Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue, foundational texts of Chinese herbal and medical practice, reference moxa as a means of restoring yang (the warming, active principle of life).

Even today, research is exploring how moxa may affect circulation, immune response, and the nervous system. Some studies suggest that moxibustion can:

  • Improve blood flow and microcirculation

  • Support immune system activity

  • Reduce inflammation by modulating cytokine responses

  • Promote relaxation through nervous system regulation

What to Expect

During a session where moxa is used, you may feel a pleasant, penetrating warmth on specific areas of your body. Most patients find it soothing and comforting. I use clean, modern methods to ensure your experience is safe, comfortable, and smoke-free.

Moxa is typically applied for a short period during your acupuncture treatment. You remain resting comfortably, allowing your body to shift into a parasympathetic, healing state. The warmth often leaves you with a lingering sense of comfort, even after the session ends.

Modern Adaptations of Moxibustion

While traditional moxa involved burning cones or sticks of dried mugwort, today there are many ways to practice it safely and effectively. At Jenny Lea L.Ac., I use moxa ointment warmed with a heat source. This method avoids smoke and odor while preserving the essence of the therapy.

Other modern techniques sometimes include:

  • Smokeless moxa sticks

  • Infrared heat lamps designed to mimic moxa warmth

  • Moxa boxes that distribute heat evenly over an area

Is Moxa Right for You?

Moxa may be especially supportive if you:

  • Often feel cold in your hands, feet, or abdomen

  • Experience chronic pain or stiffness that improves with warmth

  • Have fatigue or weakness that rest alone doesn’t resolve

  • Struggle with digestive sluggishness or menstrual discomfort

  • Feel low vitality, especially in colder months

During your consultation and treatment, I’ll determine whether moxibustion is appropriate for your situation.
